Modern Family star Ed O'Neill is set to reprise his famous role from another popular family-based sitcom, as the actor will be involved in an animated comeback for 1990s comedy Married... with Children.

Deadline reports that the series, which originally aired as a live-action show between 1987 and 1997, is being brought back to our screens in an animated format and that the show's original stars will all be back to lend their voices to their famous characters.

That includes O'Neill, who played patriarch Jay Pritchett on Modern Family, returning as misanthropic shoe salesman Al Bundy, while The Conners star Katey Sagal will also return as his demanding wife, Peggy.

Dead to Me's Christina Applegate and Entourage actor David Faustino are due to reprise their roles as the couple's teenage children, ditzy daughter Kelly and slightly more level-headed son Bud.

The new series, which has Family Guy executive producer Alex Carter as showrunner and writer, is reportedly being pitched to a range of TV networks and streaming services and has attracted a great deal of interest, although no broadcaster has yet been confirmed.

The original Married... with Children aired on Fox and became one of the longest-running live-action comedy series in the US, having aired 11 seasons in total.

Meanwhile, O'Neill's Modern Family co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson has spoken out about scrapped plans for a spin-off about his and Eric Stonestreet's characters, Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Tucker.

When the sitcom ended, Cam decided to accept a new role as a college football coach in Missouri, with he and Mitchell making the big decision to move there with their two kids, Lily and Rexford.

"I think they were just wondering if maybe this is the right family to still tell the story," Ferguson said of the idea not being followed through. "I think they were – you know, we'd been on air for 11 years and I think they were ready to move in a different direction."

Modern Family aired on ABC in the US and Sky One/NOW TV in the UK.
