James Bond actor Ben Whishaw will be sporting a very different look in his next movie, with a sneak-peek photo of his transformation into a new character having been released.

The star, who is known for his role as tech genius Q in the Daniel Craig era of 007 movies, will be taking on a new role as a multifaceted man named Eduard Limonov in upcoming movie Limonov, The Ballad of Eddie.

A first-look image has been released of Whishaw in action and he's certainly looking a little different to how we've seen him before, sporting a pair of glasses, a beard and noticeably lighter hair.

The movie is directed by Kirill Serebrennikov and is based on the best-selling novel, Limonov, by Emmanuel Carrère, with Serebrennikov, Pawel Pawlikowski and Ben Hopkins writing the script.

Limonov, The Ballad of Eddie will also star Viktoria Miroshnichenko as Eduard's wife, Elena.

Described as "a journey through Russia, America and Europe during the second half of the 20th century", the movie will introduce us to the complicated character that is Eduard Limonov.

The story is based on the life of the real-life figure of the same name, who was a Russian writer, poet and politician.

The movie's synopsis describes the character played by Whishaw as "a revolutionary militant, a thug, an underground writer, a butler to a millionaire in Manhattan. But also a switchblade waving poet, a lover of beautiful women, a warmonger, a political agitator and a novelist who wrote of his own greatness".

Paddington actor Whishaw recently shared his thoughts on Q's sexuality reveal in the latest Bond movie, No Time to Die, saying that he feels that a line that references Q dating a man "came from a good place" despite not being explored any further.

"I think I thought: 'Are we doing this, and then doing nothing with it?' I remember, perhaps, feeling that was unsatisfying," he said. "For whatever reason, I didn't pick it apart with anybody on the film."

No Time to Die is out now. All the previous Bond movies are available on DVD or Blu-ray.
