Minors: Shogo Akiyama hits first El Paso homer; Esteury Ruiz’s streak hits 38 games

Rounding up the action at the Padres’ minor league affiliates

Shogo Akiyama homered for the first time in the Padres’ organization and Brent Rooker added a walk-off blast to send Triple-A El Paso to a 9-6 win over visiting Sacramento on Saturday night.

Akiyama (.786 OPS) also singled in a two-hit game to improve to 4-for-14 since signing a minor league deal with the Padres earlier this week. He was released by the Reds after spring training.

Rooker (.881 OPS) drove in three runs on the blast and also singled, improving his batting line to .238/.333/.548 since joining the organization in the Chris Paddack-Taylor Rogers trade.

First baseman Aderlin Rodriguez (.836 OPS) homered twice, giving him nine on the season. He also doubled and drove in three RBIs, upping his total to an organization-best 35.

Shortstop CJ Abrams (1.070 OPS) went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.

Right-hander Yusmeiro Peti (11.57 ERA) struck out a batter and walked a batter in a scoreless inning. The 37-year-old has struck out four, walked three and allowed seven hits in 4 2/3 innings since singing a minor league deal with the Padres.

Left-hander Jose Castillo (0.00) struck out a batter in a scoreless inning.

Right-hander Reiss Knehr (6.49) struck out five and allowed five runs on seven hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings.

El Paso is 20-15.

DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (14-18)

  • Arkansas 6, Missions 2: CF Esteury Ruiz (1.090 OPS) went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in extending his on-base streak to 38 games, dating back to last season. LF Korry Howell (.849 OPS) went 1-for-2 with a walk, a steal and a run scored. RHP Thomas Eshelman (1-2, 6.64) allowed four runs on six hits and a walk in five innings in the loss.

HIGH SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (13-19)

  • South Bend 11, TinCaps 7: RHP Brandon Komar (0-2, 7.25) allowed six runs on eight hits and a walk in 2 1/3 innings in the loss. SS Jarryd Dale (.682 OPS) drove in three runs on two hits, including a double. 2B Ripken Reyes (.726 OPS) drove in two runs on two hits and RF Angel Solarte (.603 OPS) and 1B Olivier Basabe (.634 OPS) both had two hits.

LOW SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (18-14)

  • San Jose 8, Storm 7: RHP Michel Baez (1.17) walked a batter and struck out one in 1 2/3 scoreless innings in his latest rehab appearance. RHP Victor Lizarraga (3.38) walked four and allowed three runs in 3 1/3 innings. 3B Lucas Dunn (.887 OPS) went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, a steal and a run scored. 2B Marcos Castanon (.677 OPS) drove in three runs on two hits. LF Albert Fabian (.685 OPS) drove in three runs on his first homer.
