GSU Suffers Setback versus Texas Southern

GRAMBLING, La. | It was a tough day for the Grambling State University baseball team, as the Tigers fell to Texas Southern 24-4 on Saturday afternoon at Wilbert Ellis Field and R.W.E. Jones Park.

GSU was never able to threaten TSU, falling behind 19-0 after four innings. Cameron Bufford led GSU at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  •  Texas Southern put the pressure on Grambling State early, scoring two runs before making an out. TSU put up a total of six runs in the first inning. 
  •   In the second inning, CJ Castillo drilled a leadoff triple for TSU. Castillo scored one batter later on a ground ball, stretching Texas Southern's lead to 7-0. TSU led 9-0 at the end of two full innings.
  • Texas Southern continued to pad its lead in the third and fourth innings, scoring a total of 10 runs, crafting a 19-0 mountain for GSU to climb.
  • Grambling State tried to kick start a comeback effort in the fifth inning. Aries Gardner got Grambling State on the board with an RBI double. Later in the inning, Terry Burrell III sent a sacrifice fly to centerfield, plating Gardner and trimming TSU's lead to 19-2. Another sacrifice fly by Jarficur Parker, cut the lead to 19-3.
  • The effort proved to futile, as TSU cruised to the 24-4 victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  •  Grambling State plated four runs runs on seven hits. The Tigers left eight runners on base
  •   Texas Southern finished with 24 runs on 18 hits, leaving four runners stranded 
  • GSU committed three errors
  • TSU made one error
  • Jacorey Boudreaux (7-4) got the start on the mound for Grambling State, allowing nine runs on six hits in 2.0 innings of work. He also tallied one strikeout while issuing three walks
  • Jordan Martinez (4-2) earned the win for Texas Southern, surrendering four runs on seven hits, to go along with six strikeouts
