LOS ANGELES (KNX) – Thousands of people gathered at Grand Park in downtown Los Angeles Saturday morning for the Bans Off Our Bodies Rally.
The rally, sponsored by the Women’s March Foundation, was one of several demonstrations taking place nationwide in support of women’s right to an abortion. It comes just a couple weeks after a leaked draft opinion from the U.S. Supreme Court suggesting overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.
One of the attendees told KNX the rally was about protecting the future genertations.
“I have daughters and they’re teenagers still and it’s really important for them to have their rights as they get older,” she said. “I can’t even imagine if I’m not having those.”
The rally included a long list of speakers, including Governor Gavin Newsom’s wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Mayor Eric Garcetti, Senator Alex Padilla, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez and Los Angeles mayoral candidate Representative Karen Bass.
During her speech, Congresswoman Waters said she's taking the draft seriously, but is going to fight back.
“We are not backing down, we are not afraid, we are not intimidated, and we are not about to give up control of bodies to the Supreme Court or anybody else,” she told the crowd.
