The sun shines very brightly over the San Diego horizon, but Kyle Vassell is shining even brighter right now. The English footballer is bringing the spark that the Loyal need.

San Diego’s men’s soccer team is playing very well to start the 2022 USL Championship campaign. Through 10 matches for SD, the Loyal is in third place in the Western Conference with 20 points and a (+5) goal difference on the season. They have won six games with two losses and two draws. A huge reason for their success? Kyle Vassell.

You could say the fuse is slowly burning for the Loyal as they are ready to explode this season with the expectations for another postseason appearance. Vassell has been that spark so far.

In seven appearances this season, Vassell is tied for the USL-lead in goals with six. He is tied with three other stars who have helped their respective teams sit comfortably nearly the top of the standings. Vassell, Danny Trejo (LV), Dane Kelly (Pittsburgh), and Wilson Harris (Louisville) all have scored six goals which is phenomenal this early on in the season. Harris leads the USL in shots taken with 32 total, and Vassell is tied for fourth with 20 attempts on the season.

Vassell has made an impact every single match he’s played in this season. In Week 5, the forward scored two goals which aired him Team of the Week honors. The footballer is making his presence known early on this season as Vassell is a big reason for the Loyal’s success so far. He’s a vital part of the attack, and the opposing defenders keep an extra eye on him throughout the course of the 90 minutes.

Kyle Vassell

San Diego’s star forward started off the season playing for Cheltenham Town F.C., which is a professional club in England for League One. He appeared in 16 matches scoring two goals for the Robins.

This factors into his hot start. Vassell is in mid-season form already, but the Loyal will play in at least 22 more matches. The key for Vassell and the coaching staff is to make sure that he is in good form all season long. Seeing his success early on is surely a treat for the team and the fans of San Diego, but manager Landon Donovan and the staff can’t overuse his production.

It’s going to be fun to watch him continue his run of success for the Loyal. The team is benefiting from it, and it’s only a matter of time until the rest of the team starts getting in on the goal-scoring frenzy.
