After another injury-plagued season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Scott Alexander was outrighted off the 40-man roster last November upon clearing waivers.
However, Alexander because Alexander had more than five years of Major League service time, he was able to reject the assignment and instead become a free agent. The left-hander wound up electing free agency and remained available until this week.
According to Chris Hilburn-Trenkle of Baseball America, Alexander signed a Minor League contract with the San Francisco Giants. If Alexander makes it onto the Giants roster, he’ll reunite with former Dodgers teammates Joc Pederson and Alex Wood.
Last season, Alexander earned the final spot in the Dodgers’ Opening Day bullpen over Dennis Santana and was effective early on as he allowed only three runs over his first 13 appearances.
Alexander’s year then was interrupted that May when he was placed on the 10-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation. While the Dodgers initially hoped he would make a speedy recovery, the 32-year-old did not return to the mound until July.
Alexander pitched in five more games before getting placed on the IL for a second time due to left shoulder trouble. He was eventually transferred to the 60-day IL on Sept. 7, which effectively ended his season.
Alexander went 0-2 with a 2.93 ERA, 4.80 FIP and 1.24 WHIP over 15.1 innings pitched in 18 games during the 2021 season.

The Dodgers acquired Alexander in January 2018 as part of a three-team trade with the Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox.
He was limited by multiple injuries while with L.A., and went 7-5 with a 3.49 ERA, 4.25 FIP and 1.31 WHIP across 132 games (one start) over parts of four seasons.
