Patriot PAWS Service Dogs receives grant, shares hundreds of dog beds with local animal shelters

ROCKWALL, TX (May 14, 2022) Rockwall-based Patriot PAWS Service Dogs “paid it forward” in a big way last week after being awarded an astounding 1300 memory foam pet beds through a grant from Greater Good Charities.

Patriot PAWS set aside nearly 400 of the larger beds for their service dogs in training and their Puppy Raisers program, then embarked on a mission to share the remaining 900 beds with the Rockwall, Rowlett, Royse City, and Greenville animal shelters.

Coordinating such an effort was no small feat. They had to bring in the big dogs – members of their dedicated staff and generous volunteers – to store, load, deliver, and unload 41 pallets piled high with ‘bark beds’.

Patriot PAWS’ first stop was the Rockwall Animal Services and Adoption Center on May 10, followed by the Rowlett shelter, then Royse City, and Greenville. Hundreds of brand new dog beds – even cat beds – still in boxes, were handed off to the shelters to help homeless pets have a soft and comfortable place to lay while waiting for their fur-ever homes.

“Our heartfelt thanks to Greater Good for giving us the grant to allow us to donate these beds to animal shelters. A couple hundred beds were also donated to local animal rescue organizations. Thank you all for helping us do what we do. We are very blessed and grateful,” Patriot Paws wrote on their Facebook page.

Patriot PAWS, a non-profit service organization whose mission is to train and provide service dogs of the highest quality at no cost to disabled American veterans and others with mobile disabilities and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in order to help restore their physical and emotional independence.  Founded by professional dog trainer, Lori Stevens, Patriot PAWS has placed nearly 300 service dogs since 2006, when it was designated as an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.  Patriot PAWS trains their dogs with the help of volunteer Puppy Raisers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and student Puppy Raisers at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. They also have an innovative, 12-year partnership with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice where inmate trainers live and work with the dogs in prison.
