Paul Sewald was particularly fired up after he struck out Starling Marte to escape a jam in the seventh inning of an eventual 2-1 win for the Mariners on Friday night.

For Sewald, it was an opportunity to make a statement against his former team, which cut him after the 2020 season.

“They gave up on me, and so it's pretty nice to get a little revenge today,” Sewald said. “Most importantly, we got a win.”

Sewald was drafted by the Mets in 2012 but struggled in his four seasons with New York, posting a 5.50 ERA in 147.1 innings of work. When Seattle signed him to a minor-league deal, Sewald rewarded them by posting a 3.06 ERA in 64.2 innings last season, and has now pitched to a 3.38 ERA so far in 2022.

But no out he recorded this year felt quite like the one on Friday, when he fanned Marte in his former home park.

“It was 18 months coming,” Sewald said. “They got rid of me, and I was hoping that I could get up here and pitch against them. It's pretty nice to do it really well and help our team get the win for it.”
