Skylar Thompson’s excited message about getting chance to work with Dan Marino

The thrill of being signed by the Miami Dolphins for seventh-round draft pick Skylar Thompson was intensified by his excitement over the pending opportunity to work with franchise legend Dan Marino.

Thompson spoke about his rare chance on the “Drive Time” podcast, noting that he’s ready to absorb everything Marino has to offer.

“Man, it’s incredible,” Thompson said. “Being able to be in the same room and share thoughts and try to be a sponge to one of the greatest of all time to play the position. That’s amazing just being able to be in the same presence, being able to ask questions, have him as a resource, someone who’s done it and done it really well. That’s something I’m really looking forward to whenever I get to meet Dan, and talk to him and just pick his brain and be a sponge.”

Thompson played at Kansas State University over five seasons from 2017 to 2021. During that time, he threw for 7,124 yards while tossing 42 touchdowns and just 16 interceptions.

In last month’s draft, the Dolphins selected Thompson during the seventh and final round. Being picked that late isn’t always a great sign for players looking to make it in the NFL, but Thompson appears ready to make every effort to be with the Dolphins once the regular season starts.

Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater figure to handle most, if not all, of the quarterbacking duties for the 2022 campaign. Thompson now has a chance to get advice from those two players as well as Marino.

Having Marino to mentor him will be an invaluable asset for the rookie. In his 17 seasons with the Dolphins, Marino put up incredible numbers that made him a first-ballot member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005.

Exactly how often Thompson will be able to interact with Marino is uncertain, though any advice being offered by the team icon figures to be an asset.

The hope for Thompson is that the combination of his athletic abilities and the knowledge he gets from people like Marino will get his NFL career started on a strong note.
