Two people are dead after a chase involving the Charleston County Sheriff's Office on Johns Island.
Deputies said they responded to a reported drive-by shooting early Saturday morning on Michelle Lane. No one was injured in the shooting.
A complainant said he was working on his truck when a vehicle stopped in front of his yard and opened fire in his direction. At that time, the complaint said he dropped to the ground and returned fire, using a total of two magazines before the suspect vehicle fled the area.
As deputies were investigating, the complainant said they saw the suspected car drive by the scene while deputies were there. They chased the car, but deputies lost sight of it.
"A short time later," the car was found crashed on Brownswood Road and Dogpatch Lane. Both the driver and passenger of the car died at the scene.
An assault rifle was reportedly used in the shooting, the complainant said. Deputies found a similar weapon in the crashed car.
This latest situation comes less than a week after a Charleston County deputy was involved in a collision on Savannah Highway that killed three women. The Sheriff's Office said her police lights were likely not on. Groups have called for increased transparency into the situation over the last week.
