SANTA MONICA, California – Jermell Charlo couldn’t care less about pound-for-pound lists.

The subjective nature of constructing such rankings renders them meaningless to the IBF/WBA/WBC 154-pound champion. Houston’s Charlo is much more intrigued by the possibility of becoming the first undisputed champion in his division during the four-belt era.

He’ll have a second opportunity to join an exclusive club when he battles Brian Castano in their 12-round title unification rematch Saturday night at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Their initial 12-round fight resulted in a controversial split draw last July 17 at AT&T Center in San Antonio.

Charlo (34-1-1, 18 KOs) is listed by Caesars Sportsbook as more than a 2-1 favorite to win his immediate rematch against Castano (17-0-2, 12 KOs), the main event of a “Showtime Championship Boxing” tripleheader. If Charlo can prove the oddsmakers correct, he won’t worry about if, let alone where, he appears on pound-for-pound lists.

“I’m ranked number one in the world already,” Charlo said in reference to his divisional ranking. “I don’t know about that pound-for-pound list. Pound-for-pound list is for boxing bloggers and stuff. I’m not a blogger. I don’t care about who make a pound-for-pound list. There’s no personal belt given out for somebody that’s on the list. You know what I’m saying? Who cares about that list? I think I just focus on my career, my craft.”

The 31-year-old Charlo’s craft could help him join middleweights Bernard Hopkins and Jermain Taylor, junior welterweights Terence Crawford and Josh Taylor, cruiserweight Oleksandr Usyk and super middleweight Canelo Alvarez as boxing’s only fully unified champions of the sport’s four-belt era.

“The undisputed list is a big difference, you know?,” Charlo said. “And I wanna be [on] one of the top tiers and people look up and say, ‘One of them boys is on the undisputed list. He a dog. He a animal. He ready to go get it.’ So, not that other guys are not, but this is my moment. This is my opportunity to become superior and prestigious in the game.”

Showtime’s broadcast is scheduled to begin Saturday at 9 p.m. ET with Mexican junior featherweight contender Kevin Gonzalez (24-0-1, 13 KOs) and Puerto Rico’s Emanuel Rivera (19-2, 12 KOs) in a 10-round bout. In the network’s 12-round co-feature, welterweight contender Jaron Ennis (28-0, 26 KOs, 1 NC), of Philadelphia, is set to encounter Custio Clayton (19-0-1, 12 KOs), of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
