Coronation Street's Rob Mallard and Katie McGlynn may have seen their characters part ways almost three years ago with the tragic death of Sinead Osbourne, but the two former co-stars have remained firm friends ever since.

So much so that last month the two shared photographs together of an Easter holiday to Amsterdam.

Opening up on the strong friendship he has with his former on-screen wife, Mallard said that the serious nature of Sinead's exit storyline brought them closer together and cemented their bond.

"We were mates anyway, although I think that final storyline cemented our friendship; if you do a story like that together, you naturally become very close," Mallard told Inside Soap.

"We can sometimes go six weeks without seeing each other, but I always think the test of a true friendship is when it doesn't matter how long it's been since you last saw each other, it's like no time has passed at all. And that's what it's like with me and Katie."

Since Sinead's death, Mallard's character Daniel has found himself in a series of romantic entanglements, finally finding some happiness with Daisy (Midgeley, played by Charlotte Jordan). So what does McGlynn think of Daniel's new romance?

"She has seen some of it, and said that she thinks Daniel and Daisy work well together. Though it does come with that look that says: 'But if you like her more than me, we're over!'"

The road to romance hasn't been smooth sailing for the couple, and even now there's trouble in paradise as Daniel finds himself in a love triangle with Nicky (Wheatley, played by Kimberly Hart-Simpson) too, who tries to tempt him into giving their connection a go.

Ultimately though, Mallard admits that he thinks Daisy is the one for Daniel and hopes there is a future for the feisty couple on the cobbles, saying: "She's one of those people who, once she gets under your skin, you can never really get her out again".

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and streams on the ITV Hub.
