Nintendo Switch Lifetime Sales Overtake Landmark Sony Console

Nintendo Switch Lifetime Sales Overtake Landmark Sony Console

The Nintendo Switch is now officially the fourth best-selling console of all time in the US after overtaking a landmark Sony console.

It’s no secret that the Nintendo Switch has been a huge success. Released four years ago, the Nintendo Switch continues to be a leading console despite the fact that it’s had to compete with the newer and flashier PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

A testament to the Nintendo Switch’s enduring success is the longevity of its exclusive games. Titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Mario Odyssey, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild seem to consistently remain atop the Switch charts despite also being several years old. No piece of gaming hardware is truly timeless, but the Switch comes close to tapping into that and now, it’s passed a huge sales milestone.

Can't wait for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wilds 2? Me neither. Ease the wait by taking a look at this first look below.

According to the NPD Report, the Nintendo Switch has officially outsold Sony’s PlayStation 4 making the Switch the fourth best-selling console in US history. Sony’s PlayStation 2 holds on to the top spot, followed by the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii.

It’s a major achievement considering that the PlayStation 4 has been out four years longer than the Nintendo Switch, plus the PlayStation 4 has plenty of enviable titles in its exclusive roster including Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, The Last of Us Part II, and Horizon Zero Dawn.

In recent days, there’s been discussion over what could possibly follow the Nintendo Switch after Nintendo confirmed in its recent financial report that they were looking at making the transition to their next console as smooth as possible.

For quite some time now, fans have been asking for a Nintendo Switch Pro and it’s a likely possibility. I doubt Nintendo will completely abandon the Switch’s format altogether. Of course, we’re not ready to move on from the Switch just yet. After all, we’re still waiting on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wilds 2 which surely has GOTY 2023 written all over it.
