Pella Christian Boys Tennis Moves One Step Closer to State

Competing in their preliminary substate match with Oskaloosa, the Pella Christian boys tennis team grabbed a 5-2 victory and advanced to the substate final. 

Needing five match wins on the day, individual state qualifier Alejo Marcon got Pella Christian their first win, sweeping his singles match (6-0, 6-0) at the top spot in the singles lineup. In #3-5 singles, Shaun Oosterheert, Toby Vander Molen, and Alejandro Murdoch were victorious, and put the Eagles within one win in doubles play from advancing to the substate final. Marcon and Isaac Natelborg gave P.C. the win need with a 6-0, 6-2 victory in #1 doubles. 

The Eagles will face class 1A’s #6 ranked team Ballard in the Substate Final on Wednesday.

Eagles Soccer Teams Suffer Defeat at Van Meter

The Pella Christian soccer teams traveled to Van Meter Friday night for a girls-boys doubleheader, and both teams suffered losses. The #5 ranked Bulldogs knocked off the P.C. girls squad 4-1, while the Eagles boys soccer team fell 3-1.

The Pella Christian girls soccer team kicked off the doubleheader on the wrong note as Van Meter found the net in the first minute of the game. The Bulldogs would then add three more goals in the 21st and 48th minutes of the game. The lone Eagles goal came in the 67th minute when Joslyn Terpstra was fouled in the box and Jaclyn Holmes netted the penalty kick. Van Meter had 20 shots on goal to the Eagles two in the contest. Goalkeeper Lydia Zylastra recorded 16 saves on the night, increasing her season saves total to 116. Pella Christian’s record dropped back to .500 with the loss and now sits at 6-6.

In the night cap of the doubleheader, Van Meter grabbed the lead in the first half and took that into the halftime break. At the 60-minute mark, Aiden Stoltz knotted the game at 1’s on an assist from Jack Fancher. The Bulldogs would net the tie breaking goal on a corner kick before capping off the game with a penalty kick goal in the last five minutes to down the Eagles. The Pella Christian boys soccer team’s record now sits at 6-8 this spring.

The Eagles soccer teams return to the pitch on Monday against their Tulip City rivals Pella. The boys soccer squad will host the Dutch, while the girls play at Pella High.

P.C. Girls Tennis Hosting Regional Team Tournament Today

The Pella Christian girls tennis team hosts Albia, Centerville, and Oskaloosa in the class 1A team regionals bright and early this morning at 9 a.m. In the first round, the Eagles will take on Oskaloosa, while Albia and Centerville matchup. The winners will face off for a chance to advance to the regional championship at Pella Christian on Tuesday to face one of the four teams on the other side of the bracket. Those teams are North Polk, Pella, Saydel, and South Tama.
