COLORADO SPRINGS — An investigation is now underway by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office into a an overnight officer-involved shooting on I-25 in which at least one Colorado Springs Police Officer fired at a homicide suspect before a chase in a stolen CSPD cruiser.

According to CSPPD, officers were called to an apartment complex near South Nevada and Arvada Street on Friday night for a reported assault with a knife. Preliminary information states the suspect used the knife to threaten someone with a knife while demanding a ride, the victim in that incident was able to get away.

A short time later, the suspect entered an apartment and allegedly killed someone, according to CSPD. The suspect reportedly confronted the first officer who arrived at the complex and assaulted them.

CSPD says the officer fired at the suspect before they were able to get away in the police cruiser heading southbound on I-25.

Investigators say the suspect crashed into multiple vehicles which disabled the stolen police vehicle on I-25 near S. Academy. CSPD officers were then able to take the suspect into custody.

The major crash related to this incident forced the closure of the southbound lanes of I-25 near the South Academy exit.

The name of the suspect and the officer have not been released at this time. We do not know the extent of injuries for the suspect, however the officer suffered minor injuries and is on administrative leave, per department policy.

Under Colorado law, the incident will be investigated by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and findings turned over to the 4th Judicial District for review.
