Rami and Lucy met on the set of the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, in which Rami starred as Freddie Mercury and Lucy played Mercury's girlfriend, Mary Austin. The two first got together at Abbey Road Studios right before shooting began. In a 2019 interview with The Cut, Lucy talked about how she was dealing with her anxiety about filming by reading Anna Karenina in a corner when Rami approached her. "Rami felt so much the leader of that set," she recalled while saying she immediately realized he would be a friend to her. "The cast became so close going through that, as you always do when going through a particularly stressful experience, to put it politely."

January 2018: First Public Appearance

The two made their first public appearance together not long after filming wrapped. They were photographed together at a party thrown by Alexa Chung for her clothing collection at Moth Club in Hackney, London. Rami and Lucy continued to go to events and red carpets together, but neither commented on their relationship status. It wasn't until April of 2018 that a source finally seemed to confirm that they were dating. A source close to the couple told Us Weekly, "They met while filming Bohemian Rhapsody in London. He is so into her. He goes and visits her in London all the time."

January 2019: First Time Talking About Each Other

Fans finally got official confirmation on the status of the two at the 2019 Palm Springs International Film Festival. While accepting the Breakthrough Performance Award for his role in Bohemian Rhapsody, Rami publicly spoke about Lucy for the first time, saying, "Thank you, Lucy Boynton. You have been my ally, my confidant, my love. Thank you so much."

The two would go on to spend the entire award show season together. They put on some PDA at the 2019 Golden Globes, where they celebrated Rami's win for Best Actor in a Motion Picture—Drama by hugging and kissing at an after-party. "It sounds so silly but I was really unaware of the public element of that," she admitted.
