Injured Massachusetts exotic cat named Shakira has successful surgery, MSPCA says
An exotic Bengal cat found injured outside a Worcester home had successful surgery at the MSPCA-Angell this week."Our veterinarians say Shakira underwent successful surgery to repair her pelvic fractures earlier this week," the MSPCA said.A good Samaritan brought the cat, now named Shakira, to the shelter on April 25. Shakira – estimated to be less than a year old — was unable to walk and was in shock, the MSPCA said.“Our staff knew immediately the cat had some kind of problem with her hind legs,” said Corinne Bourgoin, MSPCA-Angell shelter operations coordinator. “They later discovered that she has a pelvic fracture that also created a destabilization of the hip joint and will require surgery.” The surgery, known as a femoral head ostectomy, was expected to cost up to $4,500. The name Shakira was decided upon after the MSPCA asked for the public’s help in naming the cat."She’s now called Shakira because, as some followers noted, her newly repaired hips don’t lie," the MSPCA said. More than 200 people submitted adoption inquiries to take Shakira home."With the incredible response, we are no longer accepting inquiries for her and the Adoption Center team hopes to place her in a new home in the coming days," the MSPCA said. Bengal cats are the result of pairing a domestic cat with an Asian leopard cat, which is known for its circles and other markings that resemble those of leopards. The cats are usually brown or silver, but this cat has a unique orange and gold coat, the MSPCA said.
