Newcastle United pulled off a wonderful move in January by signing Dan Burn. The move has gone a long way in solidifying their defence and as a result, the club’s form has improved significantly since the turn of the year. If rumours are to be believed though, Eddie Howe could be looking to add further players in central defence when the summer transfer window opens.

One of the names that the club have been linked with is Burnley’s James Tarkowski. The centre-back is in the middle of a relegation battle with Everton and Leeds United right now.

It is very possible that he could be on the move in the summer though, when his current deal runs out. Tarkowski has been linked with the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal in the past, without a move ever materialising. And at 29 years of age, he is not going to get too many more chances to get a big transfer.

As reported by the Mirror, Newcastle United are in pole position to land Tarkowski as West Ham United are set to drop their interest and pull out of the transfer race. The Burnley star is believed to be one of Howe’s major transfer targets of the summer.

Tarkowski might be playing for Burnley, who are in the middle of a relegation battle, but he himself has not been bad individually.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has made 33 appearances in the Premier League this season, scoring one and setting up a couple of goals.

Tarkowski is not only a regular for Burnley either but has also captained them on numerous occasions, and as result, will be taking his leadership qualities to any side who sign him.

Tarkowski seems just the kind of player who would thrive under the management of Howe and as a result, if Newcastle United are able to sign him, it has the potential to be a very good move on their part. A lot could end up depending on whether Burnley stay up or not though. Till now though, all indications suggest he will be moving on.
