ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — 30-year-old Sgt. Seth Plant was mauled by a bear on Tuesday.
Plant and another soldier were attacked in a training area in Alaska, according to U.S Army officials.

Reports indicated a female brown bear attacked the two in a remote section of their military base near Anchorage.
Plant was an infantryman from the Third Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment.
They later found two bear cubs, which officials believe is the reason the bear attacked.
Plant, a St. Augustine native, was later rushed to a military hospital in Anchorage and pronounced dead from his injuries.
Facebook comments are still pouring in about Plant and this fatal attack.

Roma Pearl, who grew up with Plant, commented, “sick to my stomach and still in shock.”
Plant’s sister, Gini Solano, said “This heartbreak is unreal.”
Robert Pilatsky, who lives in Plant’s neighborhood, said this incident is tragic.
“It’s a very sad thing to happen to anyone, especially a veteran who is serving our country,” said Pilatsky.
Army officials say this incident is still under investigation.
