Less than 24 hours after Legacies (along with six other CW series) were unceremoniously canceled, series creator Julie Plec has taken to Twitter to toast the end of The Vampire Diaries saga’s 13-year run on The CW.
“To my beloved Legacies — after the Parkland shootings, I decided I wanted to tell a story about the young heroes who would save us from ourselves,” Plec tweeted on Friday. “Good kids living on the fringe who ultimately were the heroes of the whole story.”
She also thanked Legacies EP Brett Matthews, “the captain, fearless leader, brilliantly funny voice of (not to mention the heart and soul of) the show. The best work husband around and someone I am proud to call my friend.”
“To the cast and crews of all. Some who have been part of the family since Day 1 of [The Vampire Diaries] in 2009,” she continued. “To the marriages that happened along the way, the children who were born, the friendships we all made and to hopefully many, many more stories to come.”
She concluded by toasting “our kindred spirits in cancellation at the CW. What a run we’ve all had. It’s sad when the business changes beneath your feet. May you all find your way to your next adventure with the knowledge that you did yourselves proud.”
Plec’s note about the business changing was in reference to the network’s atypical decision “bloodbath” of cancellations this season, which is likely due to the network’s rumored upcoming sale (perhaps to the Nexstar affiliate group) and thus its uncertain future.
As previously mentioned, Legacies (2018–2022) is the second spinoff of The Vampire Diaries (2009–2017), the other being The Originals (2013–2018). This marks the first time in 13 years that a show from this universe won’t appear on The CW’s fall schedule.
Of course, Legacies was just one of several Plec-connected series that received unfortunate news this week. The CW’s Roswell, New Mexico and NBC’s The Endgame were also canceled.

I hope they give this and Dynasty a proper conclusion :\
Liz Gillies said something on her IG about how they still have six episodes left to shoot for Dynasty, so I hope that the writers are able to come up with a satisfying conclusion there. I’m not sure if they’ve already wrapped filming on Legacies or not.
CW was allowed to do anything for years there were good time and bad times the new owners aren’t playing with them anymore free ride are over
The Parkland sh00tings? She’s insane. Karma finally got to her.
I wish the series could have been given a heads so they can wrap up the series.
they are wrapping up the series
Actually they finished filming the season before news broke of the cancelation lets hope so but I wouldn’t be so sure they will finish the series properly
im pretty sure that is the reason for delay is re-editing scenes
Everything I watch is being cancelled. Not just by CW, everything everywhere and it’s pissing me off. I bet we won’t even get a decent farewell 🤬
i know how you feel but imo legacies needed to end it was running out of story
The CW … not my favorite network! WTF are you thinking? Lost my viewership today!
Ditto
Me too. Clearly the sale is going to mean a severe change to the network content and I’m just not here for it.
Mines as well
I use to watch the CW all the time but they lost me when they canceled VAMPIRE DIARIES. The Originals was ok because I gottoknowthecharactersfrim TVD. Legacies … I’m still trying to get thru streaming the first couple episodes of season 1 but keep losing interest.
I REALLY MISS VAMPIRE DIARIES AND WISH IT WOULD HAVE LASTED LONGER!!!!!
At least a little longer. Legacies had the same effect on me … just felt like the writing and production fell way, way down into the well.
I already lost Vampire Diaries and now I’m losing Legacies so CW network is not worth watching anymore but why can’t Netflix pick up all the shows this boring network canceled.
It’s being sold. Warner and CBS don’t care about the CW anymore, that’s why they’re selling. They’ve got their own streaming services now, so they don’t need the dead weight of a network that never made a profit.
yeah i dont get why some fans are ignoring this and think cw is just going to listen to them when the reality is legacies was not a giant hit, it was the least popular of tvd franchise
even the overfocus on hope did not help the show, it might have helped bring the show down in terms of viewers
I agree. They canceled all of the shows I watched on CW. Moving on to another network.
Amen sister! We were really liking The Endgame too, and poof….over. I’m so angry!!!
If I was thinking of buying something I sure wouldn’t want the previous owners to seriously damage the brand right before I bought it. But the CW swooping in and canceling pretty much half its slate of shows all at the same time is definitely something that’s going to seriously anger— and lose— a lot of viewers who have been loyal to the network. So what brand would the new owners be buying?
At the same time, knowing the way the industry works, they’ll probably turn it into some stupid reality tv network with “Honey Boo Boo 2023” or something. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.
Majority of what was cancelled was lowrated, and really lowrated ie Dynasty. What kept Dynasty and some of the others around was the Netflix deal that ended in 2019 (that had some of the shows grandfathered in) and then the uncertainness of the early pandemic and needing content, and the bizarre scheduling because of protocols. And with the potential sale. It was all coming a head. And the end of the line for the bulk of the shows. I have heard the network would have wanted to keep Batwoman, Legacies etc but the parent network bulked because of money issues with the licenses of studio space and not wanting to continue.
They just want the network slots to program their own content.. not the shows that the CW was airing.. Likely they will even change the name.
i said earlier on facebook please dont bring reality shows in (like this) ugh
honestly as much garbage writing we got from tvd franchise over the years, we’re very lucky to get what we got, 17 seasons of 3 shows worth and half of the verse was good writing, good characters, the other half was mediocre to flat out bad writing
so I feel grateful for what we got, tvdverse was in a way lightning in a bottle
and yes there will be loose ends by the end of legacies like kalebs vampire backstory, we didnt fully get an understanding who killed cleos family like malivore could be it but we dont know, the remaining 3 gods and how they became what they were, what happens to aurora if rebekah takes the cure, things like that
Okay, you are canceling legacies then why did you use last season to have , kol , Rebecca Marcel and Freya on the show and saying they will return.such a disappointment.
Well, they didn’t know they were being canceled when they wrote that. So, that would be why.
I loved TVD since the pilot in 2009, same for The Originals…but Legacies was never as good. The plots got even more convoluted than the other two shows, plus it seemed very young compared to the prior two shows. I was a teenager when TVD started so I was in my late 20s by the time Legacies started…I found it harder and harder to relate to the teenage characters in this show (something I haven’t struggled with in other teen based shows i.e. Heartstopper, Sex Education, Everything Sucks to name a few).
It’s heartbreaking that there won’t be another season. One of my favorites!!!😪
I. Love original
I am devastated over all my favorite tv series being cancelled. Legacies, Charmed, Roswell , New Mexico, Naomi, In the Dark and Legends of Tomorrow! I mean seriously!!!! My family and I are lovers of vampires, superheroes and magic and and very disappointed!
Charmed was lucky to last a season. The ripoff of the original, the similarities yet trying to act in some way different. They really should have just continued with Wyatt, Chris, & their cousins.
I second this idea. They could have called it ‘Charming’. Such a great opportunity missed.
Dam that’s soo sad I don’t even know charmed was cancelled too big bummer I loved that show from the start of it. I can understand legacies though it was disliked by many ppl and I understand why but it definitely was a decent show. But as for charmed I am quite disappointed that they had to cancel such a great show…
The best conclusion of The Vampire Dairies trilogy would be getting some of the cast of the Vampire Diaries and The Originals in the last episode of it has not been filmed yet.
These are shows people have basically grew up watching. You start at a young age and it grows with you. For some they are just now finding TVD and The Originals and Legacies. The show, the characters; especially the characters will be greatly missed. Right now people are into sci-fi, paranormal programs. I feel bad this been a little more like The Originals or followed at least a little more of the family of Mikaelsons plus the love story of Hope it would have lasted a little longer.
So the network Plec’d Julie Plec…lol…#karma
L’unica cosa buona dopo The vampires e Original, era legacies e lo avete cancellato, Che delusione…..
I’m so upset about legacies. I tune in on the cw app every week cause I’m always so excited for it. TVD series’ is something I come back to all the time and I’ve watched all the shows multiple times. I’m actually really mad about it and will probably stop watching cw when it’s done airing cause it’s leaving way too much unexplained. Especially since Gods are now a part of it, this show could go so many different ways. Extremely disappointed and angry about it.
I LOVE ANYTHING SUPERNATURAL.
I WATCHED ALL 3 SHOWS AND LOVED THEM ALL.
I’M NOT A REALITY SHOW PERSON. LIFE IS REALITY ENOUGH, SO WHEN IT COMES TO TV I GO FOR FANTASY AND FUN.
ALTHOUGH I LOVE MY “NCIS’S AND BLUE BLOODS TOO!!
Continuing on a “Legacy” can work, but trying to reboot a beloved series like Charmed with new actors while blowing off the one and only Halliwell sisters and family was doomed from the start. It was a slap in the face to the fans AND the actors who made it great. Not even decent writing and an interesting storyline, neither of which it had, would have helped.
BINGO! It was a bad reboot for a show you can watch reruns off 4x a day which was written and acted better.
No stupid comments hope is what her name is and our darkest moments we can come back and shine Landon is who Landon is always the optimistic so dark and light meet and fall in love and we’re all on our edge of our seat to see if they actually make it together and I’m over 50 I love the show please don’t cancel it
Tell me it isn’t so Legends of tomorrow are being canceled too you guys are killing an old lady I freaking love legacies Legends of tomorrow and Charmed and I’m in my 50s you’re making a big mistake not everybody wants to see reality TV and see the stupid stuff people get paid lots of money to make fools of themselves please don’t cancel these shows
This is sad new but this is not unexpected from CW this is how they do always when u like a show so well and does good as legacies They always pull u in and leave u agitated that u won’t know the ending So not surprised they pulled before they should have.
Hate to say it, because there are a lot of hard working people who just lost their job. But Julie Plec’s karma finally caught up with her. There’s been some dubious bts stuff going on with Legacies for a while now, the Kaylee Bryant exit wasn’t random. Nevermind on top of all horrid things Plec has done writing wise over the years. She’s an OTT bad boy obsessed fangirl who happened to luck into TVD popularity because it was right around the Twilight peak and made a career out of crappy storytelling.
i still cant believe julie had the audacity like last year i think to say klaroline couldnt happen cause its a toxic couple, which there were two huge flaws with that statement, klaroline never was a couple, they didnt go on a date, they had romantic interactions at best, dont give me their final scene, that was a pity scene, a bone to throw at the klaroliners
and the other flaw is there were other toxic ships that jp had no problem with like stelena and delena but for some reason klaroline was always her blind spot julie always seemed to really hate klaus despite what she may say now she wanted him dead and the originals was never going to be a thing by her own word
The Original’s was so awesome they dressed up some men into sexy brothers and top of the food chain was very good story! Then you also have the pretty sister mean and sweet like salt and sugar mix! And they knew of the Vampire Diaries people who are all charming sexy thoughtful underneath they had awesome times made you feel like you want to be there and legacies awesome the only thing better they could do is put out new show were the best actors and actresses most loved and popular in the shower THOSE three shows could make a movie were they all got different lives but one after another thowup in a new monster and superhero series were there can be multiple different accounts they would never have to end!
um okay, not sure i get your point
Noooo!!! I’m deveststed! No more legacies? How can you not? Been a fan since vampire diaries! And Roswell :(. Both of my 2 favs on the CW.
Cw can burn in hell for cancelling so many good shows
Speaking on behalf of Hell…. we really don’t want them either.
Yes!
Is there a possibility that Legacies could be picked up by another channel like HBO max or Netflix? With a whole lot of effort, Manifest is being brought back on Netflix at least for another season. Perhaps the same could be done for some of the newly canceled shows.
