Wildcats Head to Austin for Big 12 Championships

May 13, 2022 | Rowing

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team will begin post season competition with the Big 12 Rowing Championships in Austin, Texas on Sunday (May 15) at Decker Lake.

The first race of the day will be the 3v8+ beginning at 9:15 a.m. CT and will take place every 15 minutes. Following the 3v8+, the schedule will go 2v4+, 1v4+, 2v8+ and 1v8+. The awards presentation will start at 11 a.m.

Races will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.

"Overall, our team is young, and we've been impressed with how they have made progress throughout the season," stated head coach Patrick Sweeney. "Each of our seniors has also continued to push the team forward."

During the 2022 spring season, the Wildcats have made appearances at the Hornet Invitational, the Sunshine State Invitational, the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships, the Creighton Duel and, most recently, the Dillons Sunflower Showdown.

The Wildcats won three out of five races at the Sunflower Showdown on April 30, claiming victories in the 1v4+, the 2v4+ and the 3v8+. Kansas won the day with a final point total of 15-7.

While in Omaha, Nebraska at the Creighton Duel, the Wildcats ended the day with four victories over Creighton in the 1v8+, the 1v4+, the 2v8+, and the 3v8+.

At the SIRA Championships, K-State earned three gold medals by the 3v8+, 1v4+ and the 1v8+. The 2v4+ also walked away with a silver medal.

While at the Sunshine State Invitational, the squad collected two silver medals. The medals came from the 3v8+ and the 1v4+.

The team has continued to make progress despite limited water time and difficult race day conditions during the season.

"There's going to be good racing this weekend and it will be interesting to see what we bring to our last performance," said Sweeney. "All boats have continued to find more speed as we've been working through our final race preparation. Now it's time to go for it."
