BET Awards 2022: Past Award Nominees Topping the Charts

These acts were once nominated for “Best New Artist.”

Earning the “Best New Artist” title is one of the biggest honors you can receive on the BET Awards stage. During the BET Awards 2021, six rising stars, including Coi Leray, Flo Milli, Latto, Jack Harlow, Pooh Shiesty, and Giveon, all battled it out for the trophy. Still, it was the “Heartbreak Anniversary” who was crowned 2021 “Best New Artist.” Ahead of this year’s ceremony hosted by actress Taraji P. Henson, we’re taking a look at past “Best New Artist” nominees climbing their way up the top of the music charts.

  • Coi Leray

The 24-year-old rose to prominence thanks to breakout hits, including “No More Parties,” which later received a Lil Durk-assisted remix. Currently, the singer and rapper has a track out titled “Blick Blick,” featuring veteran female emcee Nicki Minaj.

  • Flo Milli

Born Tamia Monique Carter, this Alabama firecracker better known as Flo Milli has quickly become a fan favorite following the success of songs such as “Beef FLoMix” and “In the Party,” both of which were certified gold and went viral on the social media platform TikTok.

  • Giveon

Giveon got his start in the business as an opening act for Snoh Aalegra on her “Ugh, A Mini Tour Again,” which stops in various locations in Europe and North America. However, his life would change drastically in Feb. 2020 following his appearance on Drake’s single “Chicago Freestyle,” once again proving the power of the Toronto native’s co-sign.

  • Latto

The Atlanta native was first introduced to fans after she won season one of the reality television series The Rap Game in 2016, when she was known as Miss Mulatto.  Three year’s later, she released her a club hit, “B-tch from da Souf.” Her mainstream breakthrough came following the release of "Big Energy,” the lead single from her second studio album, 777.

  • Jack Harlow

The Louisville, Kentucky native earned recognition after releasing his 2020 single, “What’s Poppin,” which peaked at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100.  The 24-year-old made his first number hit after teaming up with Lil Nas X for a track titled “Industry. Baby.” The second one is “First Class,” released earlier this year.
