ROSEVILLE — Chris and Jessica Compston didn't think they'd get to the point where they could open a restaurant together, but an opportunity appeared in their hometown they couldn't pass up.

The Roseville natives always wanted to open a restaurant, but never had the right place to do it. Both had day jobs on top of their small business, Compston Pallet Finds, which sells discounted items from wholesale and overstock merchandise.

That was until an opportunity came out of nowhere: Roseville had an open multi-purpose commercial building just as the lease on their old storefront ended.

It was their shot, and they took it. They opened Hometown Eatz-N-Sweetz in April.

"There's not a lot of mom-and-pop shops that aren't fast food," Jessica said. "(Locals) are so glad there's finally a place where people can come and eat, something in this town to do, to shop."

The multi-faceted storefront provides both a shopping destination and local eatery in a town that doesn't have many other options, Jessica said.

With the building in the village, they're able to do both. Compston Pallet Finds is in one side, and Hometown Eatz-N-Sweetz is on the other.

In short, Compston Pallet Finds sells random goods that come from liquidation sales — things like unsold items or returned merchandise. They typically mark things 50% off traditional retail prices.

It's anything from a $2 child's toy to a $600 patio set, to convenience store-type items like shampoo and paper towels. Chris likens their wholesale purchases to a treasure hunt.

"You never know what you're going to get," he said.

Hometown Eatz-N-Sweetz offers sandwiches, salads, cheesecakes, ice cream and other homemade baked goods. Daily specials often feature homestyle cooking, like steak dinners, pulled pork and more.

Jessica said she's never been much of a cook. That's why Chris takes to the grill to whip up burgers, hot dogs, chicken, fish and more. His specialty is barbecue.

The next step is opening up a patio for additional dining space and rentals for parties.

While they hope it'll be a good standby for locals, Jessica has noticed people are already coming from out of town to check out what the shop and restaurant have to offer.

Opening the store to serve their hometown was an opportunity they couldn't pass up, Jessica said.  And they won't regret it.

"It just kind of fell into our hands," she said.

Hometown Eatz-N-Sweetz is located at 34 Potters Lane in Roseville. Its hours are Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
