Prep Roundup: Cardinals sweep St. Mary in softball doubleheader

GAYLORD – Thursday was a dominant day for the Onaway softball team, which rolled to a Ski Valley doubleheader sweep over Gaylord St. Mary with 20-2 and 17-1 victories.

In the opener, Sydney Peel earned the win on the mound for Onaway (9-3, 6-2 Ski Valley), striking out five, walking four and allowing three hits in four innings pitched.  

Peel helped her cause at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Elissa Prow went 2-for-2 with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Cardinals adding a hit apiece included Kailyn George (double, three RBI, run), Taylor Larson (triple, four RBI, four runs, stolen base) and Kyli Brewbaker (RBI, two runs, stolen base). Macie Decker had two RBI, Charlotte Box knocked in a run and scored a run, Lainey Shimel scored two runs and stole a base, Lesley Lalonde scored two runs, Mackenzie Robbins had an RBI, and Sadie Decker, Lily Parr and Aubrey Benson scored a run apiece.  

Larson fueled the Cardinals in the nightcap, finishing 3-for-3 with four RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Robbins went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored, Shimel finished 1-for-1 with four RBI and two runs scored, Prow was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a stolen base, and Box went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. Brewbaker scored three runs. Macie Decker and Ema DeMaestri both scored twice.  

Box was Onaway’s winning pitcher, striking out four, allowing three hits and walking one in three innings of work.  

Onaway baseball splits at Gaylord St. Mary 

GAYLORD – The Onaway baseball team earned itself a split at Gaylord St. Mary after capturing a 5-1 victory in game one of Thursday’s Ski Valley doubleheader on the road.  

The Cardinals (7-5, 5-3 Ski Valley) were led by a team-high three hits from Cody Ruppert, who also knocked in two runs. Adding two hits apiece were Lucas Lovelace (double, two RBI), Justin Kramer (RBI, two runs) and Austin Veal (run). Cole Selke (run), Tucker Price and Jack Morgan each recorded a hit.  

Bridger Peel and the Onaway baseball team swept Gaylord St. Mary in a Thursday doubleheader.

Bridger Peel was Onaway’s winning pitcher, striking out five, allowing four hits and walking three in six innings thrown.  

However, the Cardinals weren’t able to complete the sweep after suffering a 16-1 loss in the nightcap.  

Ruppert led Onaway’s offense again with two hits. Veal (run), Lovelace and Morgan added a hit apiece. Selke had an RBI.  

Selke took the loss on the mound, striking out two, allowing seven hits and walking two in two innings pitched.  

Pellston baseball takes two at Forest Area  

FIFE LAKE – The Pellston baseball team cruised to 14-1 and 18-2 victories at Forest Area in a Ski Valley road doubleheader Thursday.  

On the mound, Zack Moyer picked up the win for Pellston, striking out 12 and allowing two hits in a five-inning complete game.  

Offensively, Ethan Landon led Pellston’s 11-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with a solo home run in the top of the first inning. Moyer added a triple, a single and knocked in three runs, while Garrett Cameron tallied two singles. Chris Dankert, Isaiah Crawford, Jack Schmalzried and Jacob Rizzardi chipped in with a hit apiece.  

The Hornets maintained their momentum in game two, receiving a 3-for-4 performance from Aiden Klungle, who laced three singles. Landon, Crawford and Schmalzried each registered two hits. Dankert, Rizzardi and Cameron added a hit apiece.  

Landon tossed four no-hit innings, striking out 10 and walking two.  

Pellston (9-11, 4-10 Ski Valley) rounds out its Ski Valley schedule when it hosts Gaylord St. Mary on Thursday, May 19.  

Hornets salvage softball split on the road   

PELLSTON – After suffering a 3-1 loss in game one, the Pellston softball team battled back to earn a Ski Valley split at Forest Area thanks to an 8-7 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader Thursday.  

In game two, the Hornets scored five runs in the sixth inning to take a lead they would not relinquish. The Hornets were keyed by a three-run triple from Madison Brown in the inning.  

Other Hornets adding hits included Emma Irwin, Megan Bricker, Caroline Crenshaw, Gabby Landon, Elysia Ward and Madison Jutson.  

Brown was Pellston’s losing pitcher, striking out nine and allowing seven hits.  

The opener was more of a struggle for the Hornets, whose lone hit came from Irwin.  

Brown, who took the loss on the mound, struck out nine and allowed one hit.  

Comets sweep Alanson, improve to 4-4 in NLC  

ALANSON – The Mackinaw City baseball team reached the .500 mark in Northern Lakes Conference play after sweeping Alanson with 13-4 and 7-4 road victories Thursday.  

Travin Barkley was Mackinaw City’s winning pitcher in the opener, striking out 10, walking five and allowing two hits in five innings.  

Tallying two hits apiece for the Comets (10-7-1, 4-4 NLC) were Sabastian Pierce (four RBI, run, stolen base), Ben Strittmatter (three RBI, two stolen bases), Nick Vieau (RBI, four stolen bases) and Barkley (RBI, run, stolen base). Braylon Currie (RBI, run, two stolen bases) added a hit, Tyler Hingston scored two runs and stole two bases, and Trystan Swanson scored three times and stole a base.  

Currie earned the win on the mound in game two, striking out five, allowing six hits and walking three in three innings of work. Vieau picked up the save, striking out six and allowing no hits in two scoreless relief innings.  

Vieau led Mackinaw City’s offense by going 2-for-3 with two RBI and three stolen bases. Other Mackinaw City contributors included Currie (RBI, run, three stolen bases), Barkley (RBI, run, two stolen bases), Jalen DeWitt (run, three stolen bases), Strittmatter (run, stolen base), Hingston (run, stolen base), Wesley House (two stolen bases) and Sabastian Pierce (run).
