It took years longer than expected, but the new Challis fire station is almost complete, Challis firefighter Doug Hammond reports.
North Custer Rural Fire District officials have scheduled a Saturday, May 21 open house and building dedication to celebrate the new building.
Equipment and supplies have been moved from the old fire hall on Ninth Street to the new building on Blue Mountain Road off U.S. Highway 93 on the south end of Challis.
Members of the Grand Lodge of Idaho Ancient Free and Accepted Masons laid a cornerstone for the building in June 2020, at the height of COVID-19 restrictions, Hammond said. So another building dedication led by the Masons is planned at 2 p.m. on May 21 since few people could attend the event two years ago.
The open house begins that day at 1 p.m. with live music, refreshments and building tours planned.
