iPhone Without SIM Card Slot

These days, there have been various rumors predicting that Apple is already working on an iPhone that lacks any physical SIM card slot.

If recent reports were to be believed, fans of the Cupertino tech giant could likely get their hands on an iPhone that exclusively relies on eSIM technology.

However, it turns out that Jobs was already looking into ditching the SIM card slot as early as the first-ever iPhone, as per a news story by 9to5Mac.

During that time, the mobile device market has yet to meet the technology that we now know as eSIM, making the Apple co-founder somewhat thinking ahead of the rest.

His idea to release a SIM-less iPhone did not take place when the tech giant was still under his leadership. But with the emerging eSIM technology, his vision for the first-gen Apple phone might be a reality in the next-gen releases.

Steve Jobs and iPhone Without SIM

The initial plan of Jobs for the first-ever iPhone was revealed by none other than the ex-vice president for iPod of Apple, Tony Fadell.

The former Apple exec recently graced an interview at an event at the Computer History Museum. Fadell spoke with journalist Joanna Stern, revealing the ideas of Jobs in the early stages of the iPhone.

The Apple iPod VP revealed that the co-founder of the tech giant was apparently against the physical SIM card slot as it ruined the design that Jobs wanted for the first-ever iPhone.

The inventor of the iconic iPod said that Jobs used to tell the designers and engineers of Apple for the iPhone that they should avoid placing another hole on the smartphone.

Fabell says that Jobs puts it this way: "We don't want another hole in it."

To completely remove the physical SIM card slot on the early design of the iPhone, Jobs offered his own solution to it.

SAN FRANCISCO - JUNE 07: Apple CEO Steve Jobs holds the new iPhone 4 after he delivered the opening keynote address at the 2010 Apple World Wide Developers conference June 7, 2010 in San Francisco, California.

The former Apple exec bared that Jobs stated that the CDMA network of Verizon could make the iPhone SIM-less.

9to5Mac further explained its technicalities, offering that CDMA phones no longer needed any physical SIM card. Instead, unlike its GSM counterpart, it could already connects straight to the network.

The intricate problem during the time that Jobs was pushing for it was the limited adoption of the CDMA network. So, until today, iPhones still have a physical slot for SIM cards.
