The Caldwell County Sheriff's Office is still looking for leads after three cases of arson in two hours Tuesday morning. KMBC 9 spoke with neighbors to get their reaction and hear their concerns as the search for a suspect continues.
A piece of burnt frame is all that's left of a house behind the Mirabile school building.
"I thought the schoolhouse might be on fire," said Ellis Chowning, who lives across the street. The 82-year-old has lived in the area his entire life.
"I heard the sirens, looked this way and all I could see was emergency vehicles up there and smoke coming up on the other side of the schoolhouse, black smoke," he said.
He would later learn it was one of three houses within about 4.5 miles along Route D in Caldwell County that authorities say were intentionally set on fire Tuesday morning.
"I've seen a lot of things happen, but this is probably one of the, one of the worst," he said.
Inside one of the houses was 96-year-old Lorene Fickess, who died.
"We've been neighbors for many years, probably 50 years," Chowning said.
He's now mourning the loss.
"Very sad, you know, I hate to see anyone have something like that happen to them. It's awful," he said. "She was just a good neighbor and a good person."
With the suspect still at large, Chowning is worried about the lingering threat.
"Yes, I'm very concerned that someone would set my house on fire," he said.
He says until the suspect is caught, he and his neighbors will be vigilant.
"My neighbor and I agreed we're going to have to watch each other's back," he said. "We're going to have to look out for each other."
The Caldwell County Sheriff's Office released photos of a black SUV with tinted windows they believe was involved in the arsons.
Sheriff Mitchell Allen tells KMBC 9 that his office has gotten a few leads from people who think they may have seen the suspect vehicle, but nothing has panned out.
Anyone with information in the case is asked to call the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office at 816-586-2681.
