Two in custody after alleged burglary in Webb City

Two people are in custody in Webb City for an alleged burglary that took place Thursday morning.

Police Chief Don Melton says it all began at 7:38 a.m., when they were called to the 1600 block of South Oronogo Street in Webb City in reference to a burglary in progress.

Officers were able to locate the vehicle used in the burglary in the area of 4th & Jefferson Streets. Officers then were able to identify a residence in the 900 block of W. 1st Street where the suspects were located.

Officers with the Webb City Special Response Team were called out and surrounded the house. Team members called over a public address system for the suspects to come out of the residence but the suspects refused to come out.

Deputies with the Jasper County Special Response Team were called to the scene and introduced chemical munitions into the residence.

A 25-year-old man from Webb City and a 28-year-old woman from Carthage eventually exited the residence and were taken into custody without further incident. They are both are being held at the Webb City Police Department pending the filing of formal charges.

Due to the close proximity to the Webb City Junior High School, officers were in constant contact with school staff and the staff set up an alternate pickup for dismissal.

Police say the scene was secured by 2:15 p.m., well before the 2:42 p.m. dismissal at the Junior High.
