(Lincoln, NE) -- Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts has ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff to honor the one million lives lost to COVID-19 in the United States.

In the media release, Ricketts says, "Flags will be flown at half-staff beginning immediately and return to full staff at sunset on Monday."

The order comes in accordance with a White House proclamation. The opening of President Joe Biden's proclamation reads as the following:

"Today, we mark a tragic milestone: one million American lives lost to COVID-19. One million empty chairs around the dinner table. Each an irreplaceable loss. Each leaving behind a family, a community, and a Nation forever changed because of this pandemic. Jill and I pray for each of them."

The proclamation shortly follows the second global pandemic summit, where President Biden called on Congress to provide $22.5 billion in funds for COVID-19 testing, vaccines, and treatment.
