The CW went on a killing spree on Thursday, cancelling six seven series including Roswell, New Mexico and In the Dark.
Also axed by the network: Legacies, Charmed, 4400, Naomi and Dynasty. They join the previously cancelled dramas Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow.
The CW’s atypical “bloodbath” of cancellations this season (at least six shows got the axe on May 12 alone) is likely due to the network’s rumored upcoming sale (perhaps to the Nexstar affiliate group) and thus its uncertain future.
Roswell, New Mexico is set to premiere its fourth (and now final) season on Monday, June 6 at 8/7c, followed by In the Dark’s fourth and final season on 9 pm.
On a brighter note, The CW renewed All American: Homecoming for a second season.
TVLine’s 2022 Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect all of Thursday’s pickups and cancellations.
Any word on Whose Line is it Anyway?
Havent heard anything yet but i hope its ok… :( this is so sad for the CW they need to move whose line to another channel quick!
It’s unkillable, been on (on and off) for over 30 years when you include the original UK version, which itself began as a radio show.
That show might be safe. With it being unscripted and low cost.
That is probably going to go on to another season for the reasons given earlier – low cost, easy to make, and while the ratings are not great neither are they on nearly any show on the CW. The low cost should save it.
Why can that just leave the show alone
Neither season has even started and they are already cancelling. WTH?
At least Stargirl hasn’t been cancelled yet.
I heard StarGirl is going air in November so they’re go wait and see the ratings for Season 3, but I have an good feeling it will be safe.
They shoould move it to HBO max, also Naomi should be picked up by HBO max.
Naomi absolutely should be continued!
It’s still getting its many interesting ducks in a row.
Netflix deal, wasn’t enough to save everything, foreign money dried up.
With this strategy of airing all yr seams to be over. Soow rated stuff all git the boot, I’d expect more reality. Maybe cbs could try a younger screwed news hour.
Hate say it stargirl isn’t that great ! But it’s “ALL” about Money! How much they can make from the makers of that show to stay on !!
It has to do with the impending sale.
Ouch. Roswell NM and Dynasty will sting. I imagine they’re season finales are already in the can so unless the writers saw the writing on the wall we might be ending them with cliffhangers. and that would be a shame.
Absolutely agreed! I’d hate to see this season’s Roswell New Mexico end with cliffhangers that won’t be resolved, since the season was produced before the show was canceled.
Well once again you have let me and my wife down. We find a show we love! Like Roswell, New Mexico and you cancel it. I guess we are just gonna have to stop watching your channel because it has become a pattern with you!
So hope you go under! Heard you were ready to be bought out hurry up people just like me are really tired of you creating these great shows and ending them.
Ugh!! I loved dynasty! It was my guilty pleasure show! I’ll miss Fallon and her antics! So annoyed!
Dynasty is such a guilty pleasure…ill miss all of it, Elizabeth Gillies, Elaine Hendrix, the clothes, the makeup, etc, etc, etc, all of it! 😡
WOW – I’ve got to be honest though, the only show I watch on the CW is Would I Lie To You, and that was just the last few weeks.
What’s today?!?! D Day for every show on network tv…wow!!!
But shows like Penn and Teller Fool Us get renewed….?
I’m sorry a lot of these shows won’t get a proper conclusion. I think I’m done with the CW after this year.
Shows like Penn & Teller are cheaper to make than scripted dramas or comedies, and can be re-sold to other networks more easily in case the CW is sold and the new owners reboot the whole network.
Yea cus Penn and teller are boring and nobody wants to see it
You seriously don’t understand how cheap a magic reality show filmed in one location is compared to a scripted show that needs dozens of actors, sets, visuals effects, etc?
Yeah, I am very upset over the ‘Roswell’ cancellation but even I know how stupid that comment was.
They renewed the flash though, which is an expenisve trainwreck.
The Flash is renewed for one more season. It averages about 600,000 viewers and is the third most watched show on the CW. Superman and Lois is the biggest show, watched by 850,000 weekly. The Flash got one more season (probably its last) because it is one of the few CW shows with over 500,000 watching weekly. Many were canceled because the CW has never made money, and CBS/Viacom and WB (CW) are trying to sell it to Netstar or to anyone who will take it off their hands. The older shows with smaller audiences that cost a lot are being canceled, as are the new ones that cost a lot and don’t pull in over 500,000 (Naomi fits that one). So this year in particular they canceled 9 shows because they are doing what they can to cut costs and give new shows a chance to get the network sold. What is not being talked about is what happens if they cannot sell the network? I am betting if they don’t sell the CW by the end of next season it may be dissolved but we will see.
Well geez. Now it don’t make sense for me to even bother watching Season 4 of Roswell New Mexico when it comes out
Wow! I am not happy about Roswell & In The Dark, I loved these shows, I can’t believe they cancelled this many, what are they going to have 6 news shows premiering in the falls? I would assume Legacies will be renewed
They’re not going to air as many shows as they did; we’ll probably get less scripted originals next summer. I really hope In the Dark and Roswell, New Mexico have shot finales that provide closure.
It sounds like In the Dark will have an ending. Legacies was just canceled btw. They picked up three new shows thats all.
It’s been cancelled.
Dynasty has been really bad the last few seasons. The storylines are so dumb. I don’t understand why they never brought Steven back. They really missed an opportunity for such a good story line involving Steven and Adam.
Completely agree. This current season is almost unwatchable. And I agree about Steven. The possibilities for storyline could have been great. I do hope they wrap it up without a cliffhanger however, but not going to hold out hope.
Damn are they going to have any Shows next season? I hope Legacies is safe since it isn’t on the cancellation list… adding yet another break between episodes isn’t helping people keep up with the show.
unfortunately legacies is now canceled.
Yes, Legacies has some great Characters/Actors going for it, although it’s gotten a little loupy lately.
After finally dropping The Flash, there’s really only 4 current shows I watch on The CW: Dynasty, Roswell NM, Legends of Tomorrow, and Superman & Lois. Now 3 out of 4 are cancelled. So much for loyalty!
I stopped watching their shows when they cancelled Legends and Batwoman (I hold grudges) but I feel like they cancelled all the good shows. I watched a majority of these. Hopefully some of these shows are still filming so they will get endings.
That’s my main issue with cancellations. They don’t want the show anymore, fine, but tell people so they can write a decent ending. Especially a show on more than a couple seasons.
Bloodbath indeed. How many shows has the network ever cancelled in just one year ?
Until this year, the last scripted original (not talking imports, cheap co-productions or unscripted) that was canceled after having aired 2 or more seasons, was The Carrie Diaries in 2014. A handful of season one cancelings – The Messengers, Valor, Katy Keene to name just a few – but anything more was given notice. Reign had prepared two endings after discussions that it -might- happen; other ones like Black Lightning, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and Jane the Virgin were given more of a chance to provide closure (though the Arrowverse really needs to find William already!). Even before 2014, it was usually 2-3 shows canceled with another one ending (for example, Ringer and Secret Circle being canceled in 2012 as One Tree Hill ended ). 2008-09 was a bit bad as that’s when the comedies ended, so The Game and Everybody Hates Chris ended along with Reaper and Privileged. So maybe four, compared to 8 scripted dramas in the last couple weeks.
Love In the Dark – maybe Netflix or Hulu could pick it up? Pretty please?
World love this!
Where’s the ratings? I really doubt if in the dark we’re low! I’m sick about only this one! Had a feeling endgame wouldn’t be renewed so I already removed it from the DVR list and now I think I can get rid of DirecTV since I could be dead by the time something is renewed I mean a year and a half, I don’t even remember what the last episode of a million little things was about! But absolutely Don’t offend Dick Wolff
Really bummed about Roswell, New Mexico – I really enjoyed the show and the original cast members coming on…any hope a streaming service will pick this one up? Maybe Netflix?
So the CW decided to renew a show that’s only been on for one season rather than keep a show that’s been on longer and has a loyal fan base (I’m talking about Batwoman)? We’re the viewership numbers that different?
I think it’s also production costs. The longer a show is on the air, the more it costs to produce.
Is the CW picking up a bunch of new shows? Cause they will have a pretty empty slate otherwise.
The Flash
Riverdale
All American
All American: Homecoming
Legacies (?)
Superman & Lois
Nancy Drew
Walker
Kung Fu
Fool Us
Gotham Knights will surely be picked up. Walker: Independence is likely. Maybe a few other new shows.
They might use more acquired international shows like Family Law and Leonardo during the regular season.
Winchesters, the Supernatural prequel, is the one pilot missing from your list, and indeed all 3 could be picked up. There was also a take of Zorro that had a mutli-script order, but that seems more uncertain.
I also was wondering if some of the acquisitions could end up in fall; I think we might see Stargirl in fall. Of the unscripted renewals, Worlds’ Funniest Animals and Masters of Illusion are also renewed. I feel like Would I Lie to You? also will; I am wondering about Whose Line if they’ll continue or not.
After making a big deal to open up Saturdays, I wonder if the CW will continue to program them or not as well.
I’m sure Sat is still a player. They have 12 hours ready for fall with renewals, 3 new hours+stargirl, reality will most likely take on sat and Fri, whoes line is sure to return in some form as it is dirt cheap. Leaving 12 hours over 5 days, not including imports.
Riverdale/Nancy drew
All American night.
Superhero tue superman star girl fall/flash Gotham spring
Kungfu/ winchester
Walker/Walker spin off
Reality fri and sat
Easy schedule
Seriously, the upfronts will be interesting.
I’m sorry they took this direction. It’s a bit extreme on its part. Was it the network’s decision or the company acquiring them? I’m guessing the latter.
Would love to see some of these names get picked up at other networks, but that’s wishful thinking
I really hope In The Dark and RNM get proper endings.
I worked on In the Dark. The show wasn’t cancelled. The show ended and that decision was made over a year ago. Crew and production already have started work on a new TV series for Paramount+ called Rabbit Hole. Please do better research. Or ask somebody involved. Don’t make up stories.
Thank you for this Jake. I’m glad the series will get a proper finale.
Thanks for letting us know Jake. It wouldve been nice if the CW said that otherwise how would people know if it has an ending or not.
nope. I just shot the series 4 finale and it ends with a cliffhanger and people were expecting the show to be picked up but weren’t sure. Last day of shooting was May 9th
At this point, i would assume Stargirl is going to be sent back to HboMax. Not much point airing it on a dead network.
Hope so, it’s one of the best DC shows currently airing. It also the bonus of being a special project to Geoff Johns (Courtney is based on his late sister) so he is likely going to champion the show.
I think it will air in the fall.
I remember when I watched the CW all the time. Now, after Roswell’s cancellation, I’m down to Superman and Lois only.
I little bit surprised that none of these made the leap to HBO Max
No one heard of most of these. Why would they?
But Riverdale continues to see another day….
Completely unsurprised, but still very sad about the Roswell cancellation. Hope they wrote it a bit more close-ended than they have the last couple seasons.
Noooo!! Not Roswell, NM! I’m so gutted, it’s one of my faves. Can only hope it has an ending with closure.
Yes, yes, yes.
Unless Nope was talking about RNM Season 4? (Hope not!)
I wasn’t quite clear as to which show he/she/they were referring to.
What are the chances some of these might get saved once the (possible) sale of the network goes through? Is there any hope? Because I’m REALLY sad about Roswell, NM.
Little to none, most have netflix deal and will be tied up their for 5 yrs. Only the newer shows, batgirl I guess would be the only candidate but with a new batman show coming in fall probably wouldn’t want to dilute bat family name by continuing a low rated show
What people don’t realize is that the WB was already sold and this is the result. The new owner is Discovery which put the CW up for sale. Discovery cuts whatever does not make money, and the CW has never shown a profit. Since Discovery bought HBO Max and the WB from AT&T, they have cut CNN+, and this year killed many shows on the CW to cut their losses before the sale. Whatever financial model they follow to cut losses led to all these shows (most are WB produced shows, not CBS/Viacom) to be canceled. Discovery is reducing the network losses before the sale to Netstar or whoever takes it off their hands. Plain and simple.
