I think I speak for a lot of fans when I say that Luke Skywalker's epic return in The Mandalorian Season 2's finale episode is easily one of the best Star Wars moments Disney has been able to produce. However, despite the hair-raising moment, a lot of fans shared their collective dismay over the way his CGI was handled.
By no means was it hideous but something was definitely off with his appearance. Admittedly, Lucasfilm knew they could've done a better job at capturing Mark Hamill's likeness for The Mandalorian and in the latest Disney Gallery documentary centered on The Book of Boba Fett (via The Direct), ILM Visual Effects Supervisor Richard Bluff detailed just exactly what went wrong the first time around.
Bluff explains that it had something to do with the face swap technology not being as advanced as they hoped it would be. He said: "At the time, we weren't able to use them in the final product because the technology was still developing. We couldn't get the resolution required."

Thankfully, The Book of Boba Fett was able to do a much better job capturing Young Luke's likeness and it was definitely a huge improvement compared to how he looked in The Mandalorian.
Now, it'll be interesting to see if the Jedi Master will still be involved in the MandoVerse especially considering Grogu aka Baby Yoda has abandoned the Jedi way to reunite with Din Djarin. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Meanwhile, The Mandalorian's third season is expected to hit Disney+ later this year.
