Rio Grande City Grulla ISD police arrested a district employee for encouraging a student under the age of 18 to engage in prostitution.

Antonio Zavala-Villarreal, 81, was charged with compelling prostitution under age 18, a first degree felony, on Tuesday.

The district said Thursday it has terminated his employment.

“At RGCGISD, student safety is of utmost priority. RGCGISD was made aware of an employee’s inappropriate conduct with a student,” a statement from the district said Thursday. “The employee was immediately arrested, and his employment with the district was also immediately terminated. Again, at RGCGISD, we are here to insure our students’ safety and will not tolerate inappropriate conduct by any of our personnel.”

Zavala-Villarreal is the latest in a string of Rio Grande Valley school district employees to be arrested on allegations of sex crimes this semester.

In March police arrested La Joya ISD educator Ricardo Garza on allegations of sexual assault; he faced more allegations in April.

On Tuesday police arrested a Mercedes ISD teacher on allegations of having an inappropriate relationship with a student.
