WAUTOMA (NBC 26) — Roads are back open after closing down earlier in the day due to a gas leak.

According to a statement from Wautoma Police Chief Paul Mott, a private contractor hit a main gas line while digging in the area Thursday morning.

Chief Mott said most of the Wautoma downtown, including the courthouse and library, had to be evacuated. Traffic was also diverted from the area and Alliant Energy shut the area power off.

Once the gas leak was stopped, fire personnel had to vent area buildings of the remaining gas. WE Energies is still at the scene making repairs. Due to the large area being evacuated, many agencies responded including Waushara County Emergency Management, EMS and Sheriff's Department, Wild Rose Fire, Redgranite Fire, We Energies, and Alliant.

The Wautoma Police Department and Waushara County Emergency Management will conduct a follow-up investigation.
