Jacob Trouba’s hit on Sidney Crosby continues to be a debate after the Rangers fought off elimination on Wednesday night, with the Penguins superstar leaving the game shortly after the hit and not returning.
Pittsburgh head coach Mike Sullivan declined to comment on the play, but when asked on Thursday, Trouba broke down the incident, which he said was not intentional.
“At the time, I didn’t know that was the play he got injured on,” Trouba said. “I tried going stick on puck when he was gonna shoot, and my stick kind of went in between his legs and hit his thigh, and that pushed my arm up. Kind of a fluky play. It wasn't massively hard contact. You never want to see a guy get hurt. I don’t know exactly what the injury is, but hopefully he's better soon.”
Despite Trouba saying that it wasn’t purposeful, and wishing the best for Crosby, that likely won’t change the harsh greeting he will receive from Pittsburgh fans in another must-win in game six on Friday night, but that’s just fine with Trouba.
“It’s OK,” Trouba said. “Won’t be the first time.”
