Nights on the Green will be held monthly in Boone, beginning Friday.

Looking for a free, family-friendly activity to attend throughout the summer? The first Nights on the Green kicks off Friday in downtown Boone at Eighth Street and Story Street, hosted by the Boone County Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The debut event “Thanks with Franks” will be sponsored by Fareway Meat & Grocery, which will serve up 500 free hot dogs, chips and water. At 5 p.m. Behn’s Centre of Dance students will perform, then at 5:45 p.m. there will be a flag ceremony. Starting at 6 p.m. through 9 p.m., live music will provided by Jordan Beem.

The other dates for Nights on the Green are:

  • June 3 — Bike & Classic Car Night)
  • July 1 — Hero Night
  • Aug. 12 — Race Night
  • Sept. 2 — Tailgate Night

“When the City of Boone approached the CVB to manage the Green Space, we wanted to have an event that would work for most schedules and give our visitors another option when coming to town,” said CVB Executive Director Kris Blocker. “It will offer kids’ activities for families with children or grandparents looking for something to do with their grandchildren — or if you just want to come listen to live music for the night. Food trucks, vendors and a beer garden will also be available each month.”

Things for youth to do will include: sidewalk chalk, bubbles, coloring, face painting, caricatures and games plus activities brought to you by the Ericson Public Library, U.S. Army, Marine Corps and National Guard.

“Activities will be a little different each month,” Blocker said. “Each event will have kid-geared activities from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., then live music from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.”

Cash and credit cards will be accepted. People are welcome to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. The event is free to attend, just cover the cost of food and beverages of your choice.

Blocker said like many CVBs and businesses throughout the United States, finding workers has been a challenge, especially hiring summer and seasonal help.

“We have a lot of activities happening in Boone County this summer that will enhance visitors’ experience. Many exciting announcement have been made and a few more to come so like and follow the Visit Boone County, IA Facebook page. The CVB is working each and every day to promote tourists to come and enjoy all the quality of life amenities Boone County has to offer,” she said.
