14 things to do this weekend in Wilmington, including the Greek Festival and Patti LaBelle

Weather might be a tad iffy this weekend in terms of outdoor stuff but, as always, there's plenty to see and do in the greater Wilmington area, from Greek Fest and Goth Fest to the legendary Patti LaBelle. 

At St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church — This annual festival of food, music, dance and Greek culture is back this weekend for its 30th annual celebration. Delicacies include Greek-style lemon chicken, lamb and chicken gyros and, of course, those wonderful Greek pastries.

Also featured: Greek musicians and dancers performing in traditional costumes, tours of the beautiful St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church on college road, and even drive-through service for folks who want a taste of food but who don't have time to hang out.

Wilmington Greek Festival

Free parking and shuttle service from the UNCW auxiliary parking lot behind the College Road Taco Bell. 11 a.m.-10 p.m. May 13, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. May 14, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. May 15. 

'Sleuth'

At Thalian Hall's Ruth and Bucky Stein Theatre — Thalian Association Community Theatre presents the Tony-winning 1970 play by Anthony Shaffer about rival mystery writers who devise a complex game of power and revenge. But will it all lead to murder? Three-weekend runs start Friday. Bradley Coxe and Reilly Callahan star in the two-actor show  7:30 p.m. May 13-14, 19-21 and 26-28, 2 p.m. May 15, 22 and 29. 910-632-2285. 

Wilmington Goth Fest

At Barzarre — The goth scene in Wilmington kick-started in part by awesomely old-school local duo Dead Cool bursts into full, black-clad bloom this weekend when more than a dozen acts from all around the literal world descend on Castle Street haven Barzarre. Dead Cool plays Friday, as does Atlanta "dark electro" act Die Sektor. Saturday's headliner, the legendary industrial/electro duo Hocico, is coming all the way from Mexico City, and Sunday features Chicago post-punk stalwarts Biocarbon13. Will be epic. 7 p.m. May 13-15, $19-$49.

Jordan Jensen

At Dead Crow Comedy Room — Brooklyn stand-up comic was in the 2019 class of New Faces of Comedy at Montreal's Just for Laughs Festival. Laid-back and endearing, she's got material about being raised by "my three lesbian moms" as well as plenty of observational humor on sex, dating and more. 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. May 13-14, $18-$28. 

Dr. Bacon

At the Palm Room — Boone band plays a blend of bluegrass, funk, Americana and rock 'n' roll and puts on a great show. They've been bringing their act to Wilmington since they formed a decade ago, and will play a two-night stand at this long-running Wrighstville Beach venue. 9:30 p.m. May 13-14, cover charge.

FRIDAY

Comedy at the Kettle

At the Brewer's Kettle — Last weekend at Dead Crow Comedy Room, Wilmington's own Matt Coghlan won the title of Port City's Top Comic. Deservedly so, because he delivered a great set, much of it about the travails of being a barista. (Told by a customer there was a fly in the pastry case, Coghlan replied, "I know! He really loves it in there.") On Friday, you can catch Coghlan, along with a murderer's row of excellent Wilmington comedians that includes Jack Nelson, Ellie Coleman (second place in Port City's Top Comic), Julia Desmond and Bridget Callahan. It's a special "comedy for a cause" event with proceeds going to help a local family of four recover from a recent house fire. 8 p.m. May 13, $5 cover. 

Laura McLean & New Riders of Calamity

At Live at Ted's — Legendary Wilmington "guitar guru" McLean plays a rare show with her excellent rock and folk outfit. 8 p.m. May 13, $7 at the door. 

SATURDAY

Patti LaBelle

At CFCC Wilson Center — Singer of such smash pop hits as "New Attitude," "Got to Be Real" and "On My Own" returns to the site of her incendiary 2019 Wilmington concert. 7:30 p.m. May 14, tickets start at $54. 

David Phelps

At Pine Valley Baptist Church — Grammy- and Dove Award-winning Christian singer brings his powerful pipes to Wilmington for a concert in support of his new album "Gamechanger." Phelps got his start singing with the Gaither Vocal Band before embarking on a solo career. Opening act is stand-up comedian Mickey Bell. 6 p.m. May 14. 864-237-3214

Port City Highland Games

Randall Parkway — Break out the kilts and check this Scottish-themed athletic event that comes complete with bagpipe bands, highland dancing, sheepdog demos, food, beer and more. The main attraction, of course, is the "heavy" sporting events like hammer throwing and log-toting. 10 a.m. May 14. $5-$20. 

Beale Street Barber Shop turns 10

All-day event celebrating a decade of business for this Cargo District fixture. One musical act will perform for each year of Beale Street's existence, including the rock-solid covers act Brown Dirt Cowboys; rock, soul, blues, jazz and funk from Soul-R Fusion; and the "cemetery and Western" of Mark Sinnis and 825. Plus, there'll be new art on the walls from artists Joe Hunt and David Meffert. 1-11:45 p.m. May 14. Free, donations accepted.

Flock of Food Trucks

This event has been rescheduled for June 30. 

At Carolina Beach Lake — Event with live music, kids' activities, beer and wine and a whole flock of food trucks. Noon-4 p.m. May 14, $5 at the gate.  

Stuff Fest

At Bottega — Wilmington comic and impresario Steph Stigma presents this full evening of comedy and tunes featuring Wilmington stand-ups including Julia Desmond and MT Bottles, and music from Dead Fox No Groove an. 4-8 p.m. May 14, $10. 

SUNDAY

Wilmington Choral Society

At CFCC Wilson Center — Longtime Wilmington singing group presents its annual "Best of Broadway" concert featuring, you guessed it, popular songs from Broadway musicals. Expect to hear renditions of tunes from shows including "West Side Story," "Oklahoma," "The Phantom of the Opera," "Grease, Sweeney Todd," "Les Misérables, "Hairspray" and more. 4 p.m. May 15, $18.
