Ready or not, district meet is here for Plainsmen

Tuesday, Thursday and Friday track meets were not something Perkins County track athletes needed the week before the district meet.
To keep athletes healthy and from becoming too fatigued, PCS coaches faced some tough decisions.
Plainsmen Head Coach Shayne Hite said the week didn’t go as well as he had hoped.
Perkins County took Colton Pouk, 800-meter run; Mason McGreer, 3,200-meter run; Blake Garner, triple jump; Charis Goddell, 1,600-meter run, Kailee Potts, 300-meter hurdles; the boys’ 3,200-meter relay and the girls 1,600 and 3,200-meter relays to the Best of the Midwest May 3 in Sutherland.
The Plainsmen competed knowing the rescheduled SPVA meet would be two days later and the Dundy County Stratton Twilight was Friday.
“Putting SPVA on Thursday was not ideal for us with BOMW on Tuesday and DCS on Friday,” Hite said.
Perins County finished SPVA fourth in the boys’ standings and fifth in the girls.
“I think if we could have been at full strength with both boys and girls we could have been third with both,” Hite said.
PCS had a hand in two of the most exciting races on the day.
Pouk ran stride for stride with Bridgeport’s Jace Phillips in the 800-meter run, but was edged out by 0.06.
In the girls’ 300-meter hurdles, Potts battled Chase County’s Jerzee Milner to the last set of hurdles. Milner stumbled and fell into her last hurdle and Potts, though off balance, claimed the win.
Garner won the conference title in triple jump, placed second in the 200-meter dash and was seventh in 110-meter hurdles.
McGreer was second in the 1,600-meter run and fifth in the 400-meter dash.
The Plainsmen’s 1,600-meter relay also finished second. Running was Erik Snyder, Triston Hite, Tony Lyon and Pouk.
Libby Cole placed second for PCS in the 400-meter dash and was fourth in high jump.
Two girls’ relays finished second.
Cole, Katie Cook, Kenna Busick and Potts combined for the runner-up finish in the 1,600-meter relay, while Goodell, Meredith Gloy, Busick and Cole ran the 3,200-meter relay.
Hite said he had to take some kids out of some things due to fatigue and some injury prevention and for Friday the team only sent a van of athletes to Benkelman.
Emily Cornelius scored the team’s only points in with a fifth-place finish in triple jump.
Up next
Several athletes are getting back to full speed for the Plainsmen.
Casey Hanson had the second fastest prelim time in the 200-meter dash at SPVA, but scratched from the finals, and Ryder Potts placed seventh in the 400-meter dash.
“They each did do some running so hopefully they can go closer to full” at districts, Hite said.
The rest of them will work through their recovery process for this week.
Districts will be Thursday in Mitchell. Also at the meet will be Bayard, Bridgeport, Chase County, Gordon-Rushville, Hemingford, Kimball, Mitchell and Morrill.
Events will begin at 9 a.m.
