CAMBRIDGE — Dorchester’s sheriff recently reminded county property ownersto secure their vehicles, sheds and other valuables.
In a social media post on Friday, May 6, the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office relayed a warning about recent thefts of currency and other valuables from vehicles, as well as attempts to gain access to sheds and covered trailers.
In an interview on Wednesday, May 11, Sheriff Jimmy Phillips said that while the thefts are not indicative of a rapid spike in crime, citizens need to take precautions to secure their property that they did not have to do in the past.
Phillips said many residents, particularly in the rural areas of the county, have been accustomed to leaving money, valuables and even keys in locked cars at their residence. That practice is no longer safe.
“It’s unfortunate, but that’s the way it is right now,” Phillips said.
If residents observe anyone on their property or trying to gain access to their vehicle, they are asked to call 911 immediately.
