The State Appeals Board will host a hearing tonight on a petition challenging the Floyd County budget for the 2022-23 fiscal year.
The Coalition for Better County Government, led by Gordon Boge, filed the petition in April protesting the “budget of Floyd County, Iowa, for fiscal year 2022-23 and related expenses included therein on renovations to the Floyd County Courthouse and Floyd County Jail facilities and the tax levy to support said 2022-23 fiscal year budget and the expenditures of tax dollars for the year in question.”
For the second year in a row, the group is asking the state appeals board to take a look at the county’s budget, this year noting that “an increase of of 11.4% in one year (for the upcoming fiscal year) of the General Services Tax Levy is unsustainable and arbitrary in the face of adequate reductions in budget expenses and total county record property tax levy with an increase of 10.5% in one year.”
The Coalition also contends the County did not adequately inform the public on how the budget numbers were determined and whether American Rescue Act Funds were incorrectly applied to help cover cost overruns in the building of the new Floyd County Law Enforcement Center and renovations to the courthouse..
The State Appeals Board public hearing on the petition is set for 6 p.m. tonight at the Youth Enrichment Center on the Floyd County Fairgrounds.
