WP sees some of area’s best athletes at last week’s meets

Between the Best of the Midwest in Sutherland and the Dundy County Stratton Twilight, the Wauneta-Palisade track teams battled some of Kansas and Nebraska’s best athletes last week.
Kyle Jutten placed third in high jump May 3 at Sutherland with Hayden Kramer, who is currently second in Class D high jump, taking the win.
Peyton Cox was sixth in shot put, an event won by Chloe Anderson of Loomis, who is third in Class D shot put.
In discus, GraCee Going placed seventh. Abby Stahbaumer of South Loup, third in Class D discus, won the event.
WP Head Coach Dawn Doetker said Best of the Midwest was a great experience and felt each of her athletes competed their best.
At the DCS Twilight Friday, WP tracksters set 17 personal bests.
Doetker said the hot day was something no one was used to and the split sessions of field events were a challenge, but the team did well and competed to the end.
Cali Cox placed first in girls’ pole vault and Kyle Jutten was second in boys’ pole vault.
Grant Walker won the 100 meter dash.
Brooke Knotts was second in the 100 meter dash to Rawlins County’s Michaela Rippe, sixth place finisher as a sophomore in Kansas 1A. Rippe was state runner-up in long jump last year and took first in Benkelman.
Knotts placed fourth in the 200 meter dash. Class D leading Kiley Hejtmanek won the event.
Perennially strong Chase County won both team titles.
