CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, Mo. (KFVS) - The suspect is dead after an officer-involved shooting following a chase.

Deputies say the suspect, identified as James Brian Langley, was treated at the scene and then taken to an area hospital where he later died from his injuries.

According to the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy initiated a traffic stop around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11 on Interstate 55 for a registration violation.

A chase began and the vehicle turned onto State Route D. It slid off the road and came to a stop.

The chase ended on Highway D near County Road 454 with an officer-involved shooting.(KFVS)

According to the sheriff’s office, when the vehicle stopped, the driver aggressively got out of the vehicle while holding a knife.

They say the preliminary investigation showed the deputy used his department-issued Taser, which had no effect on the suspect.

The suspect continued to approach the deputy, who then fired his department-issued gun, hitting the suspect one time.

The officer was uninjured and is on paid administrative leave.

The investigation is ongoing and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is on scene to assist.
