The Oklahoma Game Warden in Dewey County is asking the public for help in solving two separate cases of illegal elk poaching.
Warden Ben Radke says he received a report of two dead elk on March 18.
According to the report, the first incident occurred between Camargo and Leedey, OK, along the South Canadian River, where two elk carcasses were found 100 yards apart from each other near county roads 2090 and 740. Both elk had their head and antlers removed from their bodies. The carcasses consisted of only some bones and some hide, indicating the two elk had been there for some time. Radke says evidence collected from the carcasses indicates that both elk were poached during off-season.
Radke received another report of another dead elk, just northwest of Webb, OK, near County Roads 2160 and 750. Radke said the elk was known to frequent the property where its carcass was found and had been seen on trail cameras in the area. Wardens went to the scene and gathered evidence.
Anyone who has any information regarding these incidents is asked to contact Radke at 580-623-3255, or the Operation Game Thief Hotline at 1-800-522-8039. A reward of up to $500 can be given for information that leads to an arrest and conviction. People reporting information have the option to remain anonymous.
