Twenty One Pilots lead singer Tyler Joseph claimed this week to have been asked to write a song for "Top Gun: Maverick" before "Tom Cruise came in and just fired everybody."

"I was working with ... I don't even know if I'm supposed to say this, whatever," Joseph, a Columbus native, said during an interview Tuesday with Los Angeles radio station KROQ. "I was working with the music-placement person for the new 'Top Gun' on writing a new song for them. And then I believe Tom Cruise came in and just fired everybody."

Cruise, who stars in the highly anticipated sequel to 1986's "Top Gun," is also one of the film's producers, according to Yahoo Entertainment. The movie is slated for release May 27 after multiple delays, some of which were pandemic-related, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Joseph, during his interview with "Klein/Ally Show," didn't specify when production decided to go in a different direction.

"That trailer (for the new "Top Gun") has been out for like three years. So, there's been a few overhauls, and I was part of that."

Asked whether he actually began writing music for the movie, Joseph told his hosts "they brought me in to show me some scenes and stuff. I don't think I actually started writing."

Yahoo Entertainment reported Tuesday that a source close to the production told them Joseph's comments are "just not true" and that Cruise never saw any songs submitted by the band.
