Buffalo received the 16th pick from Vegas as part of the trade that sent Jack Eichel to the Golden Knights in February. The pick was conditional on Vegas not winning the lottery and moving into the top 10.
The Sabres have selected ninth once before in franchise history, using the selection on forward Paul Cyr in 1982. They have selected 16th on four occasions, including the selections of forward Dave Andreychuk (1982) and Martin Biron (1995).
