Buccaneers' Kyle Trask won't compete for backup job this summer?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have had the most unique offseason, to date, among all NFL clubs. 

The Buccaneers lost starting quarterback Tom Brady to retirement on Feb. 1 only to then have him return to their active roster before the midway point of March. Later that same month, reports confirmed that Bruce Arians was shockingly stepping down as Tampa Bay head coach, in part so defensive coordinator Todd Bowles could be promoted to Arians' former role. 

The Buccaneers also re-signed veteran backup Blaine Gabbert to keep him in their quarterback room that includes Brady and 2021 second-round draft pick Kyle Trask. Per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Tampa Bay quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen said on Tuesday Trask is on track to remain the club's QB3 through the summer and fall months. 

"It’s more of a learning curve," Christensen explained when speaking about Trask. "I don’t see him competing with Gabbert this year . . . I see Gabbert being the backup and Kyle being the developmental guy." 

The Buccaneers may need to have a good idea about what Trask can and can't do against live NFL defenses by this time next year, as Brady may be preparing to play in his final season before he enters the world of broadcasting. Then again, some may assume it will say plenty if Trask can't overtake Gabbert on the depth chart after over an entire year with the organization.
