Detectives traveled to a correctional facility in New Hampshire to take Matthew Candler, of New London, into custody at about 2 p.m. on Monday, May 9, according to Connecticut State Police.

Candler is charged with three counts of first-degree assault in an incident that happened in Windham County on Sunday, May 1, police reported.

A witness reported on May 1 that 51-year-old Jeffrey Rawson was assaulted early that morning in a home on Miller Road in Chaplin, according to an arrest warrant from state police.

Authorities reported that they found Rawson suffering from what appeared to be blunt force trauma to his head, and lacerations and contusions all over his body.

Witnesses told police that Candler assaulted the victim, hitting him with furniture, according to the arrest warrant.

The victim was pronounced dead that day, police said.

Police said Candler had fled the scene, and his vehicle was located by law enforcement on Monday, May 2, in Salisbury, Massachusetts.

Candler was arrested by police at the Seabrook Inn Motel in Seabrook, New Hampshire, on Tuesday, May 3, State Police reported.

Police said Candler's bond was set at $500,000.
