CORUNNA, MI – An Owosso man facing arson and assault charges in connection with a February fire that left another man seriously injured has been found competent to stand trial.
Timothy Clancy, charged with first-degree arson and felonious assault, appeared before Shiawassee County District Court Judge Ward Clarkson Monday, May 9, for a hearing in which Clarkson would rule whether Clancy is competent enough to stand trial.
After reviewing a report created by doctors at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Saline, Clarkson ruled that Clancy indeed was competent to participate in his own defense and scheduled future court dates in the case.
Clancy was taken into custody on Feb. 18 after authorities found him hiding in the basement of a home in the 1400 block of South Chipman Street in Owosso.
Crews were at the scene battling a fire. One person inside the home was taken to Hurley Medical Center in Flint and was originally listed in critical condition.
That person has since been released, authorities said.
Four firefighters and a Shiawassee County dispatcher were later recognized for their work in saving the victim’s life in the fire, pulling him from a second-floor bedroom through a window and down a ladder to safety.
Clancy has previously pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In Michigan, first-degree arson is punishable by a maximum penalty of life—or any term of years—in prison. Felonious assault is a four-year felony.
A probable cause conference is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, May 11, with a preliminary examination slated for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 17.
