Devonte Genwright started in the position April 18 and will work to improve the county’s park facilities and promote heritage tourism. Johnny Davis retired from the position in January.

“We are fortunate to have Mr. Genwright on our team in this leadership position as we continue to inventory and assess our park amenities, plan for future needs and facility upgrades, and begin to promote heritage tourism in Jasper County,” county administrator Andy Fulghum said. “This is an important role in an important time of growth in Jasper County."

Genwright previously served as the tourism supervisor at the South Carolina Parks, Recreation and Tourism Welcome Center in Hardeeville and also worked as tourism coordinator at the Dillon County Welcome Center.

“Mr. Genwright brings a marketing perspective to the Jasper County Parks and Recreation Department that is key to us moving forward,” development services director Danny Lucas said. “It is important for our county to promote a tourism emphasis, especially at the Sgt. Jasper Park. We are confident that Mr. Genwright will build upon the legacy of former director Johnny Davis."

Genwright is responsible for 10 boat landings, three of which are on the Savannah River, and the county’s parks and community centers.

“I am thrilled to be in Jasper County and I’m getting to know the county and all that we offer to the community," Genwright said. "I appreciate everyone’s support and we have great things coming for Jasper’s parks, community facilities, and recreation programs.”

Genwright graduated from Florence-Darlington Technical College, majoring in early childhood education, and also has attended Columbia International University, studying business administration, the release said. He has eight years of experience in parks, recreation and tourism.

There will be several opportunities in June for the public to meet Genwright as he begins his new position.

Genwright will be at the Coosawhatchie Community Center on June 1, Tillman-Wagon Branch Community Center on June 6, Tarboro Community Center on June 13, Robertville Community Center on June 20, and Levy-Limehouse Community Center on June 27. The meet and greets will take place from 6:30-7:30 p.m.  For more information, call 843-784-5130.
