The Ottawa Senators have fired vice president of player development Pierre McGuire, according to various reports.

McGuire joined the Senators organization in the 2021 offseason. It’s not clear what he did with the organization, but the Senators clearly didn’t see a future with him. It could be a sign of more changes in the wake of Eugene Melnyk’s passing and the ownership now in the hands of his daughters.

The Senators had a disappointing season when McGuire was with the team. They had aspirations to take a step forward after a promising second half in the 2020-21 season, but ended up performing worse with a 33-42-7 record.

It was the first time McGuire had held a management or coaching job in the NHL in over 25 years, having served previously as a scout for the Senators from 1994-96. He also spent three seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins as a scout and assistant coach, followed by two seasons with the Hartford Whalers, first as an assistant coach, and then as an assistant general manager in his second season there. He also assumed the role as head coach after Paul Holmgren stepped down due to frustration with the player’s lack of effort.
